Safra kesesi, karaciğere yapışık şekilde alt kısmında duran içi boş armut şeklinde bir organdır. Temel görevi, karaciğerin ürettiği safrayı depolamaktır. Ameliyat sonrası kesenin alınmasıyla safra kesesi taşları, İltihaplanmalar, pankreas ve poliplerin iltihaplanması tamamen tedavi edilmiş olur. Bir de ayrıyeten litotripsi adı verilen bir operasyon türü vardır ki, burda da yapılan işlem şok dalgalarıyla taşların küçük parçalara ayrılmasıdır. Uygulanacak tedavi ya da operasyon türünde, hastanın genel sağlık durumu büyük rol oynar.
